Exploring the remnants of a greener Rotterdam, I embarked on an early morning walk that showcased the mission of Stadspark West in connecting green spaces in the city. The reality is that often the path was cement, or a highway was right next to the slim walk of green, but it is progress. This progress, however, might get damaged as the government has plans to build a new train station in part of this area.
The paradox of environmental sustainability becomes clear, as on one hand, you have more trains running which avoids cars and less sustainable transport, on the other hand, you lose biodiverse parts of the city and places where people of all ages connect and relax. Perhaps the answer lies in having an open discussion, where the placement of new trains is met with the placement of new spaces of nature.
